Tom Tellez is a former American track and field athlete and coach. He was born on March 3, 1935, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He began his athletic career as a high jumper but later switched to sprints and hurdles. Tellez specialized in the 110-meter hurdles and competed in the 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympics.
After retiring from competition, Tellez became a coach and is best known for coaching legendary sprinter Carl Lewis. Tellez coached Lewis for over 17 years and helped him win nine Olympic gold medals and eight world championships. He also coached other notable athletes such as Joe DeLoach, Leroy Burrell, and Michelle Finn.
In addition to coaching, Tellez also served as the track and field head coach at the University of Houston from 1976 to 1995. During his tenure, Houston won 18 NCAA championships and produced 30 Olympic medalists.
Tellez was inducted into the United States Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. He continues to be involved in the sport as a speaker and consultant.
